Sophomore Kelly Dorsey could be a textbook example for a balancing act. Not only is she a flute player in the marching band, she also participates in cheerleading and flag football, all in addition to her IB course load.

“When I was in second grade, my grandfather bought me  a piano and taught me how to play. It sparked my passion for music and I soon aspired to play the flute,” said Dorsey. “As soon as my hands were big enough, I began to learn how [to play the flute].”

Dorsey practices every day during band class and three to four hours over the weekend. There is also a mandatory rehearsal once a week after school.

“Band has taught me the benefits of committment and of balancing school, sports, and other extracurriculars,” she said.

In addition to band, Dorsey participates in varsity and competition cheerleading,  is the captain for JV flag football, and is also on the JV flag football team. Dorsey has a 4.0 GPA, is part of the National Honor Society, and is an IB ambassador and sophomore treasurer.

Being able to balance all of these activities without becoming too stressed has, according to Dorsey, taught her time management skills.

“Time management is very important,” she said. “This is a life lesson I’ve learned from joining band.”
