Tigers, Davis prove district dominance in 56-3 win over the Knights
October 15, 2016
After a strong win against Alonso at home, Robinson (2-5) went into their game with higher hopes of fighting against undefeated district rival Jesuit (7-0). However, they were unable to break the strength of the Tigers in a 56-3 loss, while Jesuit’s Malik Davis (‘17) also clinched two county records.
“We struggled against a very good team tonight,” head coach Shawn Taylor said.” We made too many mistake[s].”
On the second play of the game, a 65-yard run for Jesuit’s Malik Davis (’17) sparked an early touchdown for the Tigers. A Jesuit interception then led to another touchdown for Davis, breaking the Hillsborough County record for the most rushing touchdowns at 68.
In the second quarter, Davis ran in yet another touchdown to become the all-time leading rusher in Hillsborough County with 5,784 career rushing yards.
“I told them to play with pride,” Taylor said about his halftime talk. “I let them know that win or lose we must play together and never give up on each other.”
Chase Volpi (’18) took over for quarterback Kobe Copple (‘19) to start the second half, throwing a 39-yard pass to Kim Mitchell III (’17) that resulted in a field goal for Robinson’s William Roseman (‘18), putting the Knights on the board.
The Knights will face the Spoto Spartans next Friday in another district match-up. Senior night ceremonies for band, cheerleading and football will happen before the game, and homecoming ceremonies will take place during halftime. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jack Peters Stadium (6311 S. Lois Ave, 33616).
