Weekly recap 2/5-2/9
February 14, 2018
After trekking all the way to Gainesville on Monday, Feb. 12, the Lady Knights finished third at semifinals— just 0.7 points away from advancing to the finals.
“We did one of our better performances, but we didn’t make it to finals,” Junior Captain Alexandra Takagishi said. “Because there are only two teams that make it to finals and we got third.”
The cheer team won the FHSAA State Championship in 2012, making it one of two teams in Robinson history to boast state rings. But since then, the program has not matched that level of success.
“I think I led pretty well for being a junior captain because there were senior captains, but I definitely could’ve done better leading the team,” said Takagishi (’19). “I am going to try and help to team to be more confident at the competitions and motivate the team.”
The Lady Knights became back-to-back District Champions this week starting with a 62-30 semi-finals win over Jefferson on Monday, Feb. 5, where point guard Kaliah Henderson (’19) scored her 1,000th point.
“It was really impressive to see her reach such an amazing milestone,” guard Emily Kemp (’20) said. “It’s motivating to see that kind of accomplishment for me, as an underclassman… it made me really proud of her.”
The championship game on Wednesday was more of a battle for the Lady Knights, but they ended up with a 53-44 win against Spoto. Click here for more on the game against Spoto.
The Lady Knights will advance to the regional quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 15 where they will face Lake Wales at Jefferson High School (4401 W. Cypress St., 33607).
The Knights started off their two-game week with a 87-73 loss to Sickles on Wednesday, Feb. 7. But the boys were able to bounce back on Friday, beating Brandon High School 64-56.
“Our performances are getting better. We are working more as a team,” Jovani Saturno (’19) said. “I feel like we’re the only people holding us back now, and I feel like we could really take it all the way if we believe in ourselves.”
The Knights will kick off the first round of districts on Tuesday, Feb. 13. The boys will play Spoto at Jefferson High School at 6 p.m. (4401 W. Cypress St., 33607).
The Knights competed in the Wrestling County Championships last weekend, Feb. 8 and Feb. 9, at Wharton High School. Although there was a new tournament layout this year, Robinson managed to take home plenty of medals after the weekend of competition.
“We had pretty close to a full team in the finals, Head Coach Tomas Montero said. “It was exciting and something new.”
Jaquan Jackson (’18) placed third, Andrue Sauceda (’18) took home the silver and Devin Jandura (’19) and Isaac Guillermo (’19) both won first.
The team will compete in the district championships Saturday, Feb. 18, at Chamberlain High School (9401 N Boulevard, Tampa, FL 33612).
